Making A Difference: More Than A Cliché

Nine Things You Can Do Now

Make a difference. It's a phrase that gets thrown around constantly by advertisers, motivational speakers, athletes, movie stars, politicians, and pastors, to the point where it has become hollow – merely another cliché on our ever-growing list of American pop culture slogans, having lost its effect long ago. It is something that as women in the Church we are called to do, yet many of us are not always clear what it means or how to go about it.

Gender Discrimination

"When you grow up, you can be whatever you want to be." Little girls in the United States hear this all the time, from their mothers to teachers to "Sesame Street" characters. Almost everywhere they go, they are encouraged to believe that girls can be just as smart, athletic, and successful as boys. Even the pictures of spunky women on magazine covers at the checkout stand tell them that when you're a girl, anything is possible.

But for little girls in developing countries, the message is just the opposite. From the day they are born, they are constantly reminded of the things they are not allowed to do.

Will Play for Food Tour Coming Your Way
Get involved with a great concert and help serve the poor with the Will Play for Food Tour! Will Play for Food is a national ministry-focused tour that encourages concertgoers to sponsor children and go on overseas missions with Food for the Hungry. Join artists such as Jonah33, Fusebox, Pivitplex, downhere and Grand Prize to get moving and give to others.

If you're involved with a church or other organization, bring the Will Play for Food Tour to you. The tour provides all the promotional materials you need—posters, flyers, Internet and e-mail advertising, national advertising through media such as Air1 radio and Christian Music Planet magazine—all at no cost to you. We also set you up with people to help organize and underwrite your promotional campaign. And the artists on the tour have volunteered to pass up hotels and stay with host families—not only to cut costs, but also to lead their audiences by example.

Engage the World with World Week
World Week is a hands-on educational program that you can use to learn about global issues—from health to the environment to justice and peace—from a Christian perspective. Walk a few miles to collect a bucket of water and learn how difficult it is for the women who make that trek several times each day to sustain their families' health. Add up all the trees it would take to provide the energy you use in your house every day. Take in 10 friends and relatives for several days to simulate what it's like to suddenly care for people orphaned by AIDS.

With each activity, World Week offers guides with instructions and questions to talk about together. World Week is a great teaching tool and the perfect chance to share ideas and values and get to know your friends and family in a more meaningful way. To find out about more World Week events and to request guides, visit the World Week website.

Christian Artists & Media Respond to the Southern Asia Crisis

We've all watched in amazement over the last weeks as the death count in Southern Asia has risen to numbers that seem almost too large to comprehend. Rescue workers from all over the world are scrambling to save lives and stretch their resources to keep the death toll from climbing even more. If they don't get the help they desperately need immediately, thousands more will die in the weeks to come.
